The Graduate Faculty Assembly is responsible for recommending graduate academic programs, policies, and regulations, and for matters referred to it by the Faculty Conference, the President, or the Chief Academic Officer of the University. It is the principal legislative body of the graduate faculty. Membership criteria are determined by the Graduate Faculty Assembly on recommendation by the Graduate Council. Criteria for membership is found in the Bylaws of the Graduate Faculty Assembly available in the Faculty Manual. The Graduate Faculty Assembly elects a chair from among its membership (excluding Deans) to serve for two years. The Chair of the Graduate Council presides in the absence of the Assembly Chair.

Qualifications for Teaching Graduate Faculty:

Eligibility to teach graduate courses is determined by department chairs and College deans through the review of faculty qualifications. Winthrop gives primary consideration to the highest earned degree in the discipline. A faculty member (tenure or non-tenure track, full time or part time) teaching graduate and post-baccalaureate courses usually has an earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline. However, Winthrop also considers competence, effectiveness, and capacity, including as appropriate, undergraduate and graduate degrees, related work experience in the field, professional licensure and certifications, honors and awards, continuous documented excellence in teaching, other demonstrated competencies and achievements that contribute to effective teaching and student learning outcomes.
