In compliance with the Title 45 Code of Federal Regulations Part 46, this committee reviews and approves all research projects involving human subjects. The IRB assures that the rights and welfare of human subjects are adequately protected, the procedures used to obtain informed consent are adequate and appropriate, and risks to human subjects are reasonable in relation to anticipated benefits to the human subjects.
In accordance with federal regulations, the IRB is composed of members with expertise in scientific and non-scientific areas, with diverse representation from the different disciplines on campus. This diversity fosters a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in Winthrop University research activities. The Provost appoints one member of the community who is unaffiliated with Winthrop University and seven faculty, one of whom is to be a physical scientist, for staggered three-year terms. The chair is appointed annually by the President from among the members. If serving on Research Council, a faculty member cannot serve on this Board. The Vice President for Academic Affairs serves ex officio as the Authorized University Representative. The Director of Grants and Sponsored Research Development (GSRD) also serves ex officio.
